Dr. Manuel Schulz

Manuel Schulz started to study sociology in Marburg in 2006 with a minor in psychology as well as peace and conflict studies. As of 2008 he changed his minor to economics and gained his diploma in 2014. Building on that he earned practical experience in the field of social politics before writing his PhD thesis from 2017 to 2022 at the University of Jena. This project was characterized by a combination of theoretical sociology and New Phenomenology and conducted under the supervision of Prof. Hartmut Rosa and Prof. Michael Großheim. It was funded by a scholarship of the German Research Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) and published in 2024 with the title “Existenz und Gesellschaft – Eine leibphänomenologische Vergesellschaftungstheorie nach Georg Simmel und Hermann Schmitz“.

During his PhD project Manuel Schulz realized a research stay at the Department of Sociology of the London School of Economics and also presented his findings at various international conferences. In 2021 he started to take his neo-phenomenological approach further by applying it to questions of risk and uncertainty in collaboration with Dr. Jens O. Zinn, Assoc. Prof. at the University of Melbourne. Since March 2024 he works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Husserl Archive at the University of Cologne and engages in a habilitation project combining aspects of existential philosophy and economic sociology.
